What Is Frosting In My Soy Candle?

If you've ever seen a white-ish colour coating on chocolate, then you have a good idea of what frosting looks like. It is caused by tiny crystal growth that forms on the top and sides of the wax, but what is it?

Frosting in soy candles in a very common thing, the proper term for this is called “polymorphism” and it describes the white coating that you would see on your natural soy candles (similar to what you would see on chocolate). It is a perfectly natural effect of using soy wax and it's a good sign that you are using 100% natural soy wax.

Some candle makers will add additives to their candles to help prevent frosting, however, we like to use soy wax in its natural form, so frosting is going to be apart of the candle. As a candle maker myself, it has taken me 4 years to accept the fact that every time I add colour to my candle or melts, frosting will make an appearance at some point (frosting isn't that noticeable in non-coloured candles).

Candle lovers who are all about using the natural candles (especially soy wax) like to see frosting as it confirms the candle is all natural. However, some may see frosting as a defect, mostly because they feel it reduces the visual appearance of the candle and they think it could effect the quality of the candle/or melt but it does not.

Frosting is not a flaw nor is it a defect and it definitely is not a candle makers inexperience. It does not affect the performance of your candle nor is it dangerous and it is something that you shouldn’t stress over.

You can help minimize frosting by keeping your candles warm overnight. Make sure not to leave them in a cold area, especially if it's a spot where there could be a temperature drop/change. This is certain to promote frosting. Soy likes stable temperatures and can only cope with gradual changes.

So if you were wondering what the white stuff was on your soy candle and were a bit concerned, don't worry. It's perfectly normal.
